READIN

Jeremy's journal

Slugs leave trails, sheep leave droppings, bees make honey, and humans leave two things: art and garbage. Where these meet is called entertainment.

🦋 Krazy

Franklin Einspruch of The Hooded Utilitarian brings to our attention the abstract expressionist work of Walter Darby Bannard and in particular, his riffs on George Herriman's comix.

🦋 Superposition

Dear Photograph is dedicated to finding new photographs of old photographs, in the scene of the old photograph -- it's a beautiful form, it reminds me of Sergei Larenkov's Leningrad project. The site is only a couple of weeks old but they've already got some great pictures. Thanks for the link, Matt!

🦋 Mural for my wallpaper

The Wooster Collective has some photos of a mural project by Göla, at a school in Palestine, any of which will work very well as desktop wallpaper:

🦋 Ceniza

En el sur de Chile este fin de semana estalló el volcán Puyehue y expulsaba un océano de ceniza al cielo. The Atlantic publica unas fotografías magnificas de la ceniza y el fuego y los relámpagos:

🦋 Landscapes

Another astronomy video -- looking down this time rather than up. Some beautiful images of the Earth as seen from the orbiting Space Shuttle -- including a view of northern Chile, where the VLT observatory is located:

Thanks for the link, Henry!

🦋 Cerro Paranal

Midway in between Taltal and Antofagasta, an array of four telescopes stands on a mountain in the Chilean desert, whirling through space under the clear skies of the Atacama. Take a look:

Full-screen display strongly recommended. (via PopSci, via Teresa's Particles at Making Light)

At Ivan Semeniuk’s Embedded Universe, you can read a couple of posts from the week he spent at the VLT observatory two years ago.

🦋 I saw a girl, she reminded me of you

Nature photo of the day comes our way from cleek:

I could look at this for a long time... The clarity of the light on her right claw is difficult to look away from.

(Also: some far-out shots of bugs and plants from Dave Bonta of Via Negativa, who is flirting with toxicity.)

🦋 Io

Nasa's picture of the day is of the Prometheus Plume, a sulfurous eruption from the surface of Jupiter's moon Io:

🦋 Crumbling Castle

photo: Dave Sanders

Today's New York Times has spectacular, picture-book photography of restoration work being done on the castles of Bannerman Island in the Hudson River. (Thanks for the link, Diane!)
