A willingness to let things wash over you can be the difference between sublimity and seasickness.

🦋 Industrial Decay

Australian blogger Wildly Parenthetical linked a few weeks ago to the Cockatoo Island Project -- photographer Patrick Boland's documentary of the old, rusting disused installations on Cockatoo Island in Sydney harbor ("Peter Panâ??s Never Never Land for a photographer who likes industrial and historical decay"). Magnificent! (As Maurice said to me, "May we all decay so colorfully!")

🦋 Parchment

UCLA has created an online collection of mediæval manuscripts -- to me this means primarily "pretty pictures"; looks like it will also be a very useful resource for people whose field of research this is.

(Some further thoughts from a mediævalist: Mary Kate Hurley of In the Middle writes about the Digital Codex.)

🦋 Mind Wall

Thanks for linking this video, Dad! "Mind Wall", by Towa Tei.

Note: if you click the little square icon in the bottom right, you can view this video on your full screen, recommended. Also, there is higher-quality video available; for some reason you can only request it after you have started playing the video -- click on the up-arrow icon in the bottom right, one of the options that comes up will be "HQ".

🦋 St Petersburg, Leningrad

The Siege of Leningrad ended 65 years ago, in January of 1944. To mark the passing of this anniversary, photographer Sergei Larenkov has created a mesmerizing mash-up -- on the streets of modern-day St. Petersburg, bombs are falling, buildings collapsing, the dead being carried away...Thanks, Maurice, for the link!

🦋 Olivier Kugler

As long as I'm posting some nice visuals:

Hermano Cerdo links today to Olivier Kugler's site -- I'd never heard of Kugler but I'm a fan now. The image above is from Kugler's travel diary documenting a (circuitous) trip from the Shetlands to Cuba; and there's a whole lot of other stuff too.

🦋 Isla Negra, Chile

Promoted from comments: Jorge links to an amazing set of photos at his Picasa account: Isla Negra is the site of one of Neruda's residences.I'm just blown away by the shades of black in this picture.

🦋 City of Books

4th Estate celebrates 25 years of publishing books with a beautiful video presentation. The resolution is high enough to watch it full screen, I very much recommend doing so.

(h/t The Wooster Collective)

Also at Vimeo: timelapse photography of building and shooting the city of books and the museum.

🦋 Together

The Wooster Collective features some art from Peter Fuss of Poland, including this billboard, which reminds me a bit (as so much else is doing these days) of The Stone Raft:
(Seen in context at Fuss's site the message is a bit different.)

🦋 Minds shot together

Listen to the song available on this page, while looking at the image on this page. Fun, right?

(Thanks to a couple of people on the Fegmaniax list...)
